conference in Miami chose to expound the value of good travel agents (page 16). But it was still insightful to listen to the rationale that each one presented to come to the same conclusion. For legendary chat show host Jerry Springer, the value of an agent came from those who identified niches, built a reputation for offering something no one else did and pushed the boundaries, just as he did when creating his notoriously popular TV show. For CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg, agents’

value came in cutting through fear and uncertainty in a “world of disruption which is only going to get more crazy”. In fact, he chided the travel industry for allowing

technology to “take over from common sense”, removing the opportunity for dialogue between customers and the agents who could offer truthful and factual advice. For Advantage chairman Steven Esom, the benefits

were twofold: the reassurance of support when things go wrong, and the ability to inspire customers to broaden their horizons and showcase opportunities they may never have considered. As he put it: if you search online, you often only “get what you Google”, adding “what about all the stuff you aren’t seeing?”. Taken together, this collection of arguments

presented a compelling body of opinion. And looking around the auditorium at the

range of agents united by their expertise, dedication and love of the industry they represent, it was impossible not to leave without a spring(er) in your step.
