WEEK WTM visitors were treated like cattle


I felt ashamed of the treatment of our foreign visitors at World Travel Market last week as we were all herded like cattle when leaving the show on the first day. It was the worst crowd congestion I have ever witnessed (pictured). A crowd of thousands was funnelled at snail’s pace from the exit of ExCeL to the platform of Prince Regent DLR station – this was 30-45 minutes of hell at a time when most people were already exhausted (I had had 23 meetings from 9.30am to 7pm). The closure of Custom House DLR station (the one nearest ExCeL) was a


problem that the show organisers and Transport for London had known about long in advance. So why weren’t shuttle buses laid on instead? It was completely unacceptable and unprofessional. All this


at a time when Britain has a troubled future and our economy desperately needs tourism. I canvassed foreign exhibitors, visitors and media around me and many said they would never come back. What a terrible introduction to London.

Cape Verde should be wary of tourism growth


Story: Cape Verde to eliminate visas for EU citizens Let’s trust they’ve thought this through carefully. Giving up over €15 million of tax (based on 600k+ arrivals in 2016) is a considerable risk. The visa revenue is arguably required to fund better infrastructure (eg waste management), labour development and training. Cape Verde offers so much – it’s grown sixfold since 2000 – but visitor growth must be considered alongside long-term destination sustainability.

Story: Magaluf regeneration plan on track, say tourism bosses A month ago we held Elite Travel Group’s conference at the Meliá Calvia Beach hotel in Magaluf, Majorca. Our 140 delegates noticed the efforts being made by Magaluf to change its image and it is good to see that there are ambitious plans to improve the resort further. I, and many of the conference delegates, stated that we would be very happy to return there for our own holidays.
