Ignoring sustainability is a risky business A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
It was great to see Clia include a session devoted to sustainability at its annual River Cruise Conference in Amsterdam (page 14). The amount of research going into new engines and fuels and the
efforts being taken to address issues such as single-use plastics shows that lines are taking it very seriously. Despite this investment, however, it was interesting that when I quizzed
the 250 agent delegates about whether they had ever been asked by a customer about sustainable issues, only one raised their hand. Some might say it begs the question why an agent should care about the issue of responsible travel when their customers don’t seem to. But as Avalon chief executive Giles Hawke pointed out, while the subject may not be top of customers’ agendas right now, it’s better to be
armed with the facts for when the questions do start coming. Increasing coverage in the national media, such as this week’s Panorama programme focusing on airlines’ CO2 usage (page 6), shows the subject of travel’s impact on the environment will continue to grow in prominence. And as the shift away from plastic carrier bags and single-use plastics in recent years has shown, there is often a tipping point when certain topics go from back to front of mind very quickly. While product, price and safety may well remain the main priorities for most customers in the near future, to suggest that a lack of questions about sustainability means the subject can be ignored would be a very risky assumption indeed.
