Flexible working in spotlight T
oday’s world is busy, often chaotic. Anyone running from meeting to meeting at this week’s World Travel
Market in London can attest to that. Having rushed from ‘Europe’ to ‘Asia’, I also stopped to speak to contacts, write stories on my phone, snap pictures of stands and take calls. So I took particular interest in what Uber’s Susan Hooper
had to say about how the industry can learn from the flexibility associated with the multibillion-pound ride- hailing app (page 4). Having worked at First Choice, Royal Caribbean, Avis and Saga Holidays, she suggested travel takes a leaf out of the gig economy’s book by dipping into pools of qualified workers for certain functions. Such a model is attractive to companies and gives
workers more flexibility, something Uber believes its drivers value more than benefits such as paid leave. She highlighted reps, but such flexibility at work could be applied to many other roles, including travel agencies. Some already champion the flexible working model, including homeworking agencies, while some shop staff monitor social media or web chat facilities in the evening. In journalism, we’re used to working any hours and from
anywhere to make sure we get the news out first, and call on freelancers when particular expertise is needed. Technology plays an increasingly important role in our
work – and yours. It also gives us the option to work around our busy personal lives, something I’m sure fellow mums can relate to. As I left WTM, I had 25 minutes to get to
my next engagements. In that time, I also had to check my emails, write a story, FaceTime my kids, change my dress and post pictures on social media. The irony wasn’t lost on me that to do it all and get there on time, what I really needed was – an Uber.
