Caution looks set to slow travel’s restart A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
Caution has been the government’s watchword since the setbacks that followed previous reopenings of the economy, and caution had become the dominant tone in the national media as Travel Weekly went to press on Tuesday. Prospects of a removal of restrictions from June 21 appeared in doubt as the latest Covid variant continued to be assessed and scientific advisors put forward cases for constraints to remain beyond that date. With reviews of border policy intrinsically linked to those shaping guidance on home soil, it seems hopes for a rapid acceleration of travel’s restart may be disappointed. That isn’t to say forward momentum could be curtailed entirely. There were realistic hopes the green list could be expanded from next week.
However, confidence that the first major travel review at the end of June would herald a much wider reopening have inevitably been tempered while such uncertainty remains (pages 4-5). If travel’s restart continues to be restricted while the domestic economy reopens, then the government’s case against tailored support for the sector and a fair application of existing grant schemes must be further undermined. Abta faces criticism of its own over its fee structure and financial demands on members (page 6). Yet members and non-members alike will be united in hoping chief executive Mark Tanzer mounts a compelling argument to MPs on the Treasury select committee on Monday and persuades the government to change course. A one-size-fits-all approach to business support becomes more absurd, and damaging, by the day.
