Deloitte hails 2019 as ‘outstanding’ for travel
Fundamental economic factors also look good for 2020. Lee Hayhurst reports
Travel Weekly Insight Annual Report partner Deloite hailed a positive performance for the travel industry in 2019 and delivered an upbeat assessment of prospects for 2020. Alistair Pritchard, lead partner
travel and aviation at Deloite, said “in the circumstances, given the uncertainty”, the report data pointed to an “outstanding” result for the sector last year. “We had a prety torrid Q1 in the
run-up to the original March Brexit date, when bookings tailed off, and

by Easter, bookings were behind the previous year,” he said. “Everyone hoped for a bounce
back and that did not really come through. Ten it did start to come back and we had strong lates, and that continued over the summer.” Kantar/Service Science research
for the report suggested 89% of UK adults who took an overseas holiday also took a domestic break – up nine percentage points year on year. And the overall number of
people who took a domestic holiday
in 2018-19 was 71%, up five percentage points on the previous 12-month period. Looking forward to 2020, Pritchard
said the fundamental economic factors looked positive for the industry. Te consumer research suggested
more people are likely to take a holiday in 2020 than in 2019, with most looking to spend the same or more.
