CONNECTIONS ADVENTURE: AZORES, PORTUGAL 2019
Azores committed to becoming a sustainable tourism destination
T
he Azores government is working with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and UN to certify the islands as a sustainable tourism destination.
Delegates at Connections Adventure heard that the work was part of a commitment to a sustainable future for the Azores. Marta Guerreiro, secretary for energy, environment and tourism, said the
government was working to increase the islands’ international recognition as an outstanding nature destination, while ensuring resources and people’s quality of life were not jeopardised. “The Azores has established itself as Europe’s leading nature destination,” she added.
EXPLORING THE TRUE MEANING OF ADVENTURE The definition of adventure holidays can differ significantly depending on a traveller’s expectations, according to a panel taking part in National Geographic Traveller’s ConnecTALKS session at Connections Adventure. Comparing the adventure sector to the luxury market, panellists agreed that the term has different meanings for different clients – though there was an agreement that common themes include a duty to protect destinations visited. Philippe Brown, of Brown + Hudson, said adventure could be defined as “boundary-pushing and a sense of accomplishment and change”. Panellists agreed that travel firms play a major role in educating clients and managing expectations. Matthew Jackson, managing director of National Geographic Traveller UK, said: “It’s like your client going to Mauritius and asking for Argentine wine. It’s all very well saying ‘my client’s super-rich and that’s their favourite wine’, but we have to educate people about sourcing local produce and using local guides.”
