SANCTUARY CHOBE CHILWERO Chobe National Park, Botswana
LOCATION: Nestled on the fringes of Chobe National Park, home to the world’s largest population of elephants, Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero is accessible by road and air. The nearest airport, Kasane, is about a 10-minute drive away.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: A lofty, hilltop position gives this lodge the advantage when it comes to views: far-reaching «>noÀ>m>Ã oÛiÀ Ìhi hoLi ,iÛiÀ >n` yoo`«l>in LiloÜ V>n be taken in from the property’s outdoor terrace, where we enjoyed cool drinks and a light lunch as soon as we arrived.
THE FACTS: Each of the property’s 15 standalone suites has a private terrace and garden. Rooms are equipped with air conditioning, ceiling fans, mosquito nets, minibars and complimentary Wi-Fi. The accommodation is spread out across sprawling, sprinkler-fed lawns and clad predominantly in ÃÌoni ÜiÌh Ìh>ÌVhi` Àoown}] }iÛin} ->nVÌÕ>ÀÞ hoLi Chilwero a different feel to the treehouse-style tented camps found elsewhere in Botswana. Our suite feels more like a private villa, with a large four-poster bed, free-standing bath tub and indoor and outdoor shower with Africology toiletries. Elsewhere, there’s a split-level swimming pool and compact spa, which although looks a little rudimentary, gives a mean full body massage.
IDEAL FOR: Elephant-loving clients simply have to visit Chobe National Park. The reserve is home to more than 50,000 of these gentle giants, meaning sightings are endless and utterly incredible. Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero is also an excellent option for families – this fenced lodge boasts three family suites, offering an extra bedroom for children, and can arrange tailored activities for younger guests.
EXPLORE: Chobe National Park is beautiful, with swathes of red soil-savannah dotted with skeletal teak trees contrasting with the rich blues and greens of the Chobe ,iÛiÀ >n` ÃÕÀÀoÕn`in} yoo`«l>inð oÀnin} >n` iÛinin} game drives, motorised boat safaris and sundowner cruises on the river are included in the lodge’s rate.

WOW: Like at every Sanctuary Retreats property, the staff go above and beyond to ensure a special stay. On the eve of my birthday, staff arranged a candle-lit dinner on our terrace. When we headed inside, more candles led to our bathroom, where a bubble bath and bottle of champagne were waiting.
BOOK IT: From $543 per person per night for seven nights or more.
