POUSADA TRIJUNÇÃO, CERRADO

South America’s largest savannah region, the Cerrado in Central Brazil, is an important habitat for many species, including the maned wolf. Onçafari has set up a programme with one of the only lodges in the vast area to monitor the animals and take tourists on research drives for a taster of the work being done. Morning walks provide opportunities to spot rare birds, while night boat rides are excellent for viewing dwarf caiman by torchlight.

COMUNA DO IBITIPOCA, MINAS GERAIS

Set at the foothills of the Mantiqueira mountain range, this 13,000-acre private reserve has been reforested, paving the way for the reintroduction of native species such as the woolly spider monkey. Visitors can choose to stay in a converted 18th-century farmhouse, private cottages or inside a traditional village where communities continue to thrive. Use electric bikes or ride horseback to explore the site’s many caves and waterfalls.
