Pre-pandemic ocean cruisers testing out river cruise waters
More than a third of those who took an ocean cruise before the pandemic have chosen to do their first river cruise in 2022-23, a new survey by Uniworld Boutique River Cruises revealed. The research from 500 customers aged over 50, carried
out between September 21-27, also found that 41% preferred smaller ships and with fewer people. Another 30% said that river cruising offered more varied scenery and views, while 17% preferred the slower paced itineraries of river cruising. UK managing director Chris Townson said: “78% of surveyed guests had done an ocean cruise and 33% of them were sailing with ultra-luxury cruise lines such as Oceania, Regent and Silversea.”

In addition, LHW’s booking revenue has outpaced 2019 levels each week since February 2022 and the firm’s consumed and on-the- books business for the year is up 14% compared with 2019. The report highlighted a number of trends including consumers continuing to “trade up” when travelling, with suite and villa bookings 36% above 2019 levels, according to LHW. The company added that occupancy and room rates are also on the rise, despite inflation and recession forecasts looming, with LHW’s average daily rate 40% above 2019.
