Chris Sparling, screenwriter of the well-received BURIED, here creates another claustrophobia thriller for first-time feature direc- tor David Brooks. During an Arc- tic-cold Christmas season, investment counselor David (Brian Geraghty) goes out of his way to secure a date with office crush Emily (Alice Eve) when he learns she’ll soon be leaving the company. Unfortunately, David is unable to fend off obnoxious fifth- wheel Corey (Josh Peck, late of Nickelodeon’s DRAKE & JOSH) when he begs for a ride and de- mands a stop at an isolated ATM along the way. David’s baffling decision to park the car at a ludi- crous distance from the ATM

starts the series of contrivances which soon trap all three parties inside the structure and make them easy pickings for a myste- rious, silent, parka-clad figure bent on their destruction. David’s remorse over losing half of the retirement fund of one of his elderly clients scarcely jus- tifies the hellish punishment he and his companions receive over the course of the feature, but no other rationale for the actions of the mystery assailant (Mike O’Brien) is offered. Meanwhile, the killer (anyone who stops by to witness the goings-on is as good as dead) benefits not only from careful pre-planning but from a series of coincidences that might as well be the result of di- vine (or at least supernatural) in- tervention. ATM is certainly well-constructed and not without
