DVD Spotlight Dracula Frankenstein Universal Classic Monsters The Essential Collection By Tim Lucas Bela Lugosi’s gaze is more hypnotic than ever in Universal’s meticulous Blu-ray restoration of DRACULA.


This year, Universal Studios is celebrating its 100th year and commemorating their cente- nary by undertaking an ambitious back catalogue clean-up, digitally remastering 100 of its classic titles from the best available elements in 1080p. Just in time for the Halloween season, Universal has finally shed its grace on the titles most identi- fied with the company’s early success: its horror films. Their principal franchise titles have been collected in a compact eight-disc set with more than 12 hours of bonus features, including some literal features. Six of these titles—Tod Browning’s DRACULA (1931, including its Spanish version), James Whale’s FRANKENSTEIN (1931, including the documentary UNIVERSAL HORRORS), Karl Freund’s THE MUMMY (1932), Whale’s THE
