ADAPTING TO NEW CHALLENGES
It’s critical that organizations take steps to ensure the security of their IT estates during post-lockdown business recovery, explains Thales’ Thorsten Krüger.
WITH THE WORLD GOING THROUGH A COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF ADVICE being given on how companies should deal with this situation to come out the other side not just alive but thriving. There are a lot of options to consider for IT and security teams who’ve found themselves at the crux of business continuity in a world still rapidly evolving and full of unknowns. Choices that IT professionals make now will directly and signifi cantly impact the long-term recovery trajectory for organizations, which is why they need to stay vigilant in order to ensure the safety of their data. Most advice circulating today focuses on nailing security basics – a great place to start. But as bad actors fi nd new ways to exploit vulnerabilities of the distributed workforce, organizations have to look beyond security basics and engage in eff orts that address the increasing number of sophisticated cyber-attacks without being an obstacle to productivity. It’s time to adapt to the new normal or risk falling back into old behaviors that are no longer eff ective – and put data at risk. The shift to remote working unveiled new cyber security vulnerabilities that are resulting in a record
number of costly and persistent breaches. On top of the new vulnerabilities, organizations must also adapt to their new remote employee infrastructures. With that in mind organizations have to take certain steps towards security, especially now that they have the chance to rework some of their processes from the ground up during this period of business recovery. A key starting point here are issues that arise from ‘dark’ data centers and increasing cloud adoption.
IT teams have a signifi cant impact here, by adapting to circumstances in smart and creative ways.
Even before the current pandemic, cloud adoption
was beginning to replace traditional IT data center infrastructure. Today’s distributed workforce means data centers will go ‘dark’ even faster as remote work appears to remain a permanent state for many companies. Projects that were put on hold during the fi rst few months of the Coronavirus pandemic are now moving forward, which means that cloud infrastructure and services will now reign supreme.
