BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR RETAILERS

There are cyber threats in store for retailers, but the technology that enables them to rise to the challenge is available, says Axis’s Edwin Beerentemfel.

IT WOULD BE AN UNDERSTATEMENT TO SIMPLY SAY THAT THE ENTIRE WORLD IS CURRENTLY undergoing a period of turbulence. Such global upheavals may force populations to rethink the way they work, particularly how they handle their daily routine. The immediate impact of the changeover to remote working models such as the home offi ce, and restrictions on freedom of movement, have automatically led to an increase in online activity. However, this has also resulted in a more vulnerable

environment in which cyber criminals seek to take greater advantage of the lack of security among the population and businesses. It is now more important than ever to maintain good cyber hygiene and to put up defences against attacks. This begins right from increasing awareness and

monitoring the rapidly-evolving threat landscape, in addition to enforcing strict policies and behaviour to protect valuable data. Cyber security has an especially important role to

play in retail trade. This is because the industry is in a constant state of fl ux; even in non-exceptional situations. Self-service retail checkouts, unattended grocery stores or the ‘Click-and-Collect’ system are

examples of the innovations off ered by technological applications that optimise retail processes. However, the many systems that make this smooth shopping experience possible, with all their massive quantities of customer data, are also a valuable target for cyber criminals. Whether it’s an attack on a retail chain, extorting ransoms to recover systems and fi les, or trading stolen data on the dark web using crypto- currencies – these attack scenarios are a reality.

GDPR has prompted retailers to evaluate the data that is collected, and how it is stored and used.

In the context of increasing cyber crime against

retailers, Bitsight.com reports that there are now four major new cyber security threats for retailers. These include refund fraud, gift card fraud, supply chain attacks and IoT vulnerabilities. Retailers continue to struggle to comply with the principles of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The result can be catastrophic when in addition to the cost of such violations, you also consider a possible GDPR-related
