#1 Put Down Your Phone
We’re always surprised at what connects most with people who watch one of our videos. In the video ‘Kid President’s Open Letter to Moms’ was included a brief line about putting down your phone. It was a simple joke about how you should put down your phone, unless someone in your family is named Phone. (The next piece of advice was to not name your kid Phone.)
We had no clue that millions of people would watch and share that video. We also had no clue that more than half of the people watching the video would see it on their mobile devices. That probably helped it touch a nerve. Just days after the video was posted, we received email after email from people telling us how it inspired them to have a phone-free weekend. One mother emailed us to tell us she was inspired to totally get rid of her phone. (We thought this was a bit extreme, but hey, whatever it takes.)
It does, however, tap into something we’re all trying to figure out: How can we really be present? Technology is amazing. We humans are more connected than ever, but sometimes it can disconnect us from all the people we love most. One big step to being awesome is remembering to treat the people right in front of you awesome.
Maybe there’s something getting in the way for you.
And it’s not just phones. There were times when our family was so busy taking photos and filming our adventures that we forgot to actually enjoy them. We had to rethink all the stuff that was getting in the way of us really enjoying and experiencing our time together. In creating this book, we realised there are lots of really cool moments that happened along our journey that aren’t documented with a photo. It kind of made us happy. It’s somehow actually cooler that we got to fully be part of those moments together. It’s like they only exist in what Robby calls ‘brain pictures’.
