The Sharpham Trust working to protect and rebuild areas of saltmarsh on its riverside estate

A

long the River Dart at Sharpham, an important piece of Devon’s natural

landscape is being carefully restored. The Sharpham Trust is working to protect and rebuild areas of saltmarsh on its riverside estate, helping to conserve one of the county’s most threatened habitats. Saltmarsh is vital to the health

of Devon’s rivers. It helps absorb tidal energy, reduce erosion, store carbon and provide rich feeding grounds for birds, fish and other wildlife. Yet across England around 85% of saltmarsh has been lost, making the remaining stretches along the Dart increasingly precious. At Sharpham, 7,850 square metres of saltmarsh has recently been designated a County Wildlife Site, recognising its importance as part of a wider network of connected habitats across the county.

Restoration work includes

repairing traditional stone walls that protect the marsh from erosion, allowing sediment to build up and, over time, helping saltmarsh plants to return. The project has been supported by a £25,000 grant from the Devon Environment Foundation, enabling this careful, long-term conservation work to continue. The Trust is inviting visitors to join the gardening team exploring the

estate and gardens this summer, where the same care is being applied to cultivated spaces. The garden tours will explore the variety of plants, trees, fruit, and vegetables grown at Sharpham using sustain- able, wildlife-supporting practices. Guided garden tours will take place on 14 June, with two sessions: 12.30–1.45pm and 2.45–4pm, each limited to 40 places. For full details and booking information, visit the Sharpham website.
