We also had an opportunity to step out of our industry box and think about the future world in a presentation on Life in 2050 made by Dr Ulrich Eberl, where he showed us some of the megatrends impacting society, leaving us with some thoughts about the future societal and environmental challenges created by a future population level of 9.5-10bln, such as: • by 2050, as many people will live in cities as live on the entire planet today
• raw material resources and energy demand will more than double from today’s output
• computing power, storage capacity and data transmission will be 1,000 times higher than today
When reflecting back on the development of our world, from the early industrial revolution, we have since been through a series of developmental revolutions, waves or cycles, steel and transport, electrical and chemical, mobility and communications, so what is the next wave? With all the various pressures it looks as if we are driving towards an energy and environmental protection wave or revolution. Food for thought!
