Over One Million Porsche Cars Factory-Filled with Mobil 1
In early June I visited the Porsche Leipzig car plant to be part of the celebrations to mark their manufacture of over 1 million Porsche cars with 500,000 coming from the Leipzig plant.
It is claimed that Porsche Leipzig is the most specialised and cleanest car plant in the world and it is now 10 years old.
The visit was organised by ExxonMobil who are their ‘first fill’ supplier. Porsche and Mobil are united by their commitment to innovation and superior quality and they announced that over one million Porsche cars have been factory-filled with Mobil 1 since 1996.
The alliance has seen both partners advance technologically in the automotive world, delivering cutting- edge innovations and superior performance, as well as significant developments in engine efficiency.
This successful relationship is set to strengthen even further in 2012 with the announcement of the new Boxster as the newest addition to the long line of Porsche models filled at the factory with Mobil 1 oil, at the same time as the much-hailed Porsche 911 comes on sale to a long queue of discerning drivers.
Dieter Steinhauser, Manager Motorsport- Development, Porsche AG said: “In endurance racing, all components and systems are subject to extreme stresses. So high-performance lubricants are vital in order to be successful in motor sports. For both works and customer racing, our race cars are initially filled with Mobil1 engine oil, which demonstrates its efficiency in direct competition on race circuits around the world.”

markets and Porsche applications by the engineering experts at Porsche AG underlines the technical superiority of fully-synthetic Mobil and its applicability from track to town and from sports car through to SUV.
Through advanced design, the new Porsche models achieve new heights of performance, to which the finishing touch of Mobil 1 lubricant’s advanced technology raises the performance bar even further.
Mobil 1 stands for innovative developments, high quality engineering and technical advantage. With over 35 years of formulation expertise, and an in- house design team for proprietary synthetic base fluids and a relentless pursuit of top quality, Mobil 1 oils deliver performance at all temperatures and all conditions, with a robust performance profile, advanced wear protection and a proven extended drain capability.
Hans-Peter Deeg, operating fluids powertrain, Porsche AG, said: “We congratulate Mobil 1 on achieving this milestone. Every single Porsche engine is filled with Mobil 1 ex works. Due to the significantly high efficiency, Porsche explicitly recommends Mobil 1 as service lubricant – on and off the track.”
Laurent T Fischer, ExxonMobil Lubricants and Specialties, said: “Porsche represents a standard of performance excellence that we share at Mobil 1. From the exacting demands of the racetrack through to the requirements of every driver, Mobil 1 oil delivers. Chosen by mechanics, chosen by OEMs and chosen by consumers, Mobil 1 is the oil for every driver in every condition.”
In the morning of the visit we were shown around the Porsche Leipzig car plant. We saw the assembly of two different Porsche cars, the Panamera and
the Cayenne. Each car section is fitted with extreme precision to a millimetre and uses timing accurate to the second. The
hospital-like cleanliness, precision and quality was astounding.
In the afternoon, we had the opportunity of driving some of the Porsches, this was the moment I’d been waiting for. I slid into the low leather seat, the engine was already purring, it was a left hand drive automatic. My colleague sat in the passenger seat. We fastened our seat belts and once everyone was ready, the instructor spoke over the internal speaker and led us out of the pit stop. The powerful engine handled superbly. I was driving on the on-road track with famous sections of race tracks from around the world: the Loews from Monte Carlo, Monaco; the Bus Stop from Spa- Francorchamps, Belgium; the Corkscrew from Laguna Seca, USA and the Mobil1 S bend from Nürburgring, Germany. We both drove two laps each in five different cars. Each time I drove, it became apparent that the car I drive back home in the UK is an old 4x4 as there was always a gap in front of me – I struggled to keep up!
When we got back my heart was pounding with excitement. But the thrills weren’t over. We were then taken out by the instructors in Macans, the new SUV from Porsche, Macan is Indonesian for tiger and boy it was a tiger!
This plant oozes innovation, quality and competence and is a model for motor vehicle production around the world.
