Biodegradable base oils
Srđan Sokolović, MBA, PhD, Business Development Expert, Owner of Sowa Solutions
Producing a finished lubricant oil involves the blending of different base oils to obtain the necessary viscosity, as well as the addition of specified additives to ensure that the finished oil has the right properties to provide the intended lubricating ability.
Lubricants have a crucial role in the effective operation of engines, machinery, and various mechanical systems. They are most important for reducing friction, preventing wear and tear, and ensuring that industrial equipment runs smoothly and lasts longer.
The main types of lubricants include oils, greases, and solid lubricants. The base oil market size is estimated at 35.15 million tons in 2025, and is expected to reach 37.88 million tons by 2030, at a CAGR of 1.51% during the forecast period (2025-2030).
Base oil market Market size in million tons CAGR 1.51%
Three forces have underpinned the measured growth of the base oil market: • The migration from Group I to higher-performance Group II and III stocks;
• Tightening global emission rules; • The expanding role of synthetic formulations in electric-vehicle (EV) drivetrains.
