In Memoriam
E. D. ‘Eddie’ Hateley, Houghton Vaughan PLC (1935-2025)
UKLA regrets to announce the passing of Edward ‘Eddie’ Hateley, former UEIL President, in December 2024.
Born in May 1935, Eddie (a long-term resident of Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands) was a Director of Birmingham-based Edgar Vaughan & Company Ltd, latterly Houghton Vaughan PLC.
He served on the Board of the BLF from 1993 to 2000 as Vice-President, Honorary Treasurer and Vice-President for Long-Term Planning. He also led the association’s representation to UEIL over many years and was a Board Member of UEIL.
GEIR expresses its deepest sadness at the passing of Dr. Paolo Donnabella, founder of one of its members Ra.M.Oil S.p.A., at the age of 93.
Dr. Donnabella’s pioneering work in oil regeneration began in 1962 with the establishment of Ra.M.Oil. He was also one of the founders of the National Consortium for the Collection of Used Oils in Italy (CONOU), which played a key role in shaping the industry’s future and making Italy a leader in oil collection and regeneration.
In 1998 Eddie was elected to the role of President of UEIL, succeeding Dr Manfred Fuchs, and led the European Lubricants association of 300 companies representing a 30% share of the European lubricants market. In that role, his fluency in French
and Spanish, his charm and pragmatism, as well as his clarity of purpose, were used to great effect.
Importantly, he mentored several other UK representatives to UEIL including Tim Bates, Hugh Dowding and Peter Vickers.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Donnabella will be remembered for his integrity, optimism, and dedication to those he worked with. His company and legacy are carried forward by his sons.
Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.
