Looking back, what achievements are you most proud of? There are a quite a few, but the list of my proudest achievements would include...

Firstly the work I have been able to do to further our progress towards sustainable future; pioneering technology for environmentally acceptable lubricants, now used worldwide in the marine industry and contributing, through the UEIL Sustainability Committee, to a global initiative to put sustainability at the heart of our industry through some very practical initiatives. During this time we have seen the introduction of the Carbon Footprint Working Group, the Downstream Working Group and the Communications Working Group.

My second would be handing over a company which is thriving and growing again.

Finally, my third would be staying true to the belief that people matter, no matter the circumstances.

What advice would you give to young professionals considering the industry? Make sure you have a strong “why”—a deeper motivation beyond just having a job. For me, it’s knowing that our industry plays a crucial role in sustainability. If you have a purpose you believe in, you’ll find fulfilment.

What is the best decision you’ve ever made? Marrying my wife Kerstin, because she changed my perspective on the environment, which directly influenced our work in sustainable lubricants. If I hadn’t married her, I might not have pursued the biodegradable products that are now central to our business.

(My wife very sadly passed away in 2015. In 2022 I met my partner Sue, I am a very lucky man, I have been blessed twice).

How do you see the future of Vickers under new leadership? I think it’s going to be very exciting. The new team brings fresh perspectives, and I see a great balance between innovation and maintaining the company’s core values.

Final thoughts? I feel tremendous gratitude for the people I’ve worked with, the opportunities I’ve had, and the friendships I’ve made. A mentor once told me, “Human capital is far more valuable than financial capital.” If you focus on people, everything else falls into place.

When do you officially finish? At the end of March*. After that, my partner Sue and I will be taking a short break, and I will be back to start organising the company archives in preparation for our bicentenary in 2028.

Note from Editor: I found an interview that Peter did in 2005 for “For A New World” magazine where he stated: ‘If we are going to survive and provide for the future, we are going to have to design sustainability into all of our products and services. I believe that only companies that set out to have a sustainable basis will survive...

The struggle for sustainability may well be the defining characteristic of industry in this century.’

Peter, my dear friend, mission accomplished!
