America’s, reflecting the understanding of the importance of having globalised, aligned and harmonised methods for calculating PCFs.
The webinars featured contributions from Markus Garb (Fuchs/UEIL), Mika Kettunen (Chevron/ATIEL), Inga Herrmann (Ergon/ATIEL), Elisa Swanson-Parbaeck (Perstorp/UEIL), Raoul Meys (Carbon Minds) and included a Q&A session moderated by Gemma Stephenson (Cargill/UEIL). The main topics covered included:
• Why we need a global PCF standard for lubricants and specialities
• How the PCF methodology was developed • The key elements of the methodology, including the product system boundaries, the scope/declared unit, data collection and alignment / harmonisation with other industry methodologies (for example, TfS’s ‘The PCF Methodology for the Chemical Industry’)
The UEIL & ATIEL PCF METHODOLOGY WEBINAR is now available for general viewing via the UEIL website:
https://www.ueil.org/sustainability/
The methodology has been independently validated by TÜV Rheinland Energy GmbH; “In accordance with the standard ISO 14067: 2018 and the GHG Protocol Product Standard, the reviewer concludes that the PCF methodology framework developed by Carbon Minds GmbH and UEIL/ATIEL is scientifically based and reflects the state of the art”, the first time such a validation has been assigned to any PCF methodology in the global lubricants industry.
A copy of the methodology can also be downloaded from the UEIL website:

update Marco Codognola, GEIR President
In April, the long-awaited High-Level Report on the future of the Single Market from Enrico Letta, former Italian Prime Minister, was published. The recommendations therein will inform the agenda of the incoming European Commission following the European elections in June. Of particular interest for the regeneration sector is the focus on the ‘circular economy as the only possibility of saving the planet’. The report highlights that there is a vast untapped potential within the continent for the circular economy, calling for the creation of a ‘Circular Single Market’ to promote environmental sustainability and stimulate growth.
GEIR welcomes the recommendations of the report and calls on the upcoming Commission and Parliament to take them forward and deliver on the objectives of the Green Deal. As discussions around the EU’s strategic agenda for the next five years get traction, it is clear that the circular economy will be
at the center of the EU’s policy-making, given its key role in increasing the EU’s competitiveness (a newly defined priority area) while succeeding in the green transition. Moreover, in the framework of the Council discussions on the future of the Green Deal, Member States will invite the next European Commission to establish a new Strategic Action Plan on circular economy that promotes technologies and business models that enable the reduction of resource demand. Within this context, GEIR stands ready to work with the EU institutions in the next mandate to ensure that the new legislative framework on sustainable waste management promotes the circularity of waste oils.
