METALWORKING FLUIDS

Optimising metalworking fluids: A sustainable approach for your business

Songul Facey, Technical Sales Manager, TotalEnergies UK

From precision-engineered bespoke products to large-scale machining of parts and components, metalworking is an essential part of the UK’s manufacturing economy. The UK government has set a target to reduce energy consumption by 30% by 20301

, mandating net zero emissions for

2050. With these deadlines fast approaching, it’s essential that the manufacturing sector, including metalworkers, assess their environmental impact with a view to become more sustainable. In this piece, we answer 3 questions on how the correct lubricant choice and proper use can enhance not only sustainability and workplace safety, but also boost performance in metalworking.

The importance of metalworking fluids Firstly, when selecting products, metalworkers should assess their options in terms of health and safety, as well as their harmful effects on the environment. For example, choosing products that have less harmful components and toxicity can be a good first step to take in achieving greater sustainability. Products without pictograms or precautionary statements should be the first choice, and the product’s SDS can be used to check if it contains components with negative effects on health, safety and the environment.

Secondly, there are a range of innovative environmentally solutions available, such as specialized pure cutting lubricants that have high flash point.

Innovations in metalworking fluids The right fluid can achieve energy efficiency and longer tool life, reduced downtime and consumption, and reduced waste – all of which contribute to increased productivity, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. In operations using water-based cutting fluids, using new-generation bio-polymer technology is something that metalworkers should
