WOMEN IN THE LUBRICANTS INDUSTRY

Celebrating women’s contributions in manufacturing: The inspiring legacy of Vickers Oils

In the UK, women remain underrepresented in the manufacturing industry despite comprising almost half of the UK’s work force.

Recent trends, however, indicate a positive shift, particularly in STEM roles, signalling progress toward gender parity. One company leading the change in advocating diversity is Vickers Oils, based in Leeds, UK, whose commitment to their core value, “people matter,” shines through in their inclusive approach to business.

Vickers Oils, founded in 1828, a private, independent company now led by the 6th and 7th generations of the family, has established itself as pioneers in sustainable lubrication, catering to industries ranging from Marine to Textile and Food Grade. With nearly two centuries of history, Vickers Oils boasts a tradition of generational leadership.

One such pioneer was Mary Randall Vickers, who, in 1808, assumed control of her late husband’s business while simultaneously raising eight children—an extraordinary accomplishment that showcases her entrepreneurial spirit. Alongside her son, Benjamin Randall Vickers, Mary led “Mary Vickers & Son,” making it one of the few businesses in 1819 headed by a woman. Benjamin, inspired by his mother’s resilience, went on to establish Vickers Oils in 1828, laying the foundation for the company’s enduring legacy.

Today, Vickers Oils continues to honour Mary’s legacy by prioritising diversity and inclusion within the

organisation. Notably, 50% of their Research and Development, Quality Control, and Technical teams are comprised of women, with at least one woman represented in every department—an achievement that highlights the company’s commitment to gender equality.

Abigail Waller, Global Key Accounts Manager at Vickers Oils, reflects on the progress made over the years within the lubricant industry, noting a significant increase in the number of women since she joined the industry 15 years ago.

As the industry continues to create a more inclusive and rightful workplace environment, companies like Vickers Oils remind us that diversity is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic advantage. Celebrating women’s contributions, Vickers Oils created a piece that extends beyond the workplace, highlighting the women in their team and their passions outside of work. By strengthening the voices and experiences of women in manufacturing, Vickers Oils not only showcases their talents but also inspires future generations to pursue careers in STEM and beyond.
