The year of 2024 kicks off with Belgium holding the presidency of the Council of the EU for a six-month term, coinciding with the European elections in early June and the end of the current mandate. Strengthening the circular economy is one of its priorities, with a focus on contributing to the sustainable use of resources. Therefore, the Waste Framework Directive (WFD) will be a key dossier of this presidency, aiming to minimise waste across various sectors.


At the end of the presidency, Belgium will present a series of recommendations. These will offer valuable insights for future endeavors and contribute to shaping the priorities of the next Commission. It will be a priority for GEIR to ensure that increasing waste oils recycling remain high on the agenda.


As negotiations about the WFD revision in the Parliament progress, GEIR continues to engage with

MEPs and stakeholders to ensure that its position, which is to promote measures on waste oils. The votes in the European Parliament are scheduled for February and March, although the Council’s work will probably not be completed before the end of the parliamentary term.


This year will also see the formal adoption of the Eco-design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which have been recently agreed upon by the institutions. The ESPR will introduce new requirements for goods such as lubricants, including circularity, resource efficiency, carbon and environmental footprints and information. The ESPR is a general framework, while specific requirements will be defined through secondary legislation. Specifically, the requirements for lubricants will be addressed
