is because many of the lower SAE grade passenger car engine oils have been formulated with Group III due to the lower volatility requirements and elevated engine performance requirements that can only be achieved with a higher quality Group III formulation approach.


Group II demand has transitioned into the heavy-duty engine oil sector as a primary market, but also into the secondary industrial sector due to its increasing availability to local blenders and cost competitiveness to Group I for equivalent viscosity. In these instances, customers can elevate the performance of their industrial oil products with a Group II base oil at a comparable cost to a Group I formulation. This has continued to support the transition of Group I base oil demand to Group II in Europe and other regions where Group I has been the traditional choice for industrial oil and lower quality automotive oil formulations like monograde and lower performance categories.
