VLS Chairman’s column

A warm welcome from me as the incoming Chair of the Verification of Lubricant Specifications and many thanks to my predecessor Mike Bewsey for chairing the organisation so well over the past two years.

I take over the role at a time of momentous change for the industry. Having worked all my career in the fuel and lubricants additives business, I am very conscious of the enormous challenges that lie ahead for the sector as we move to a net zero economy embracing new fuel types including electric and hydrogen.

However, at the same time we need to be very conscious that the majority of vehicles use internal combustion engines running on fossil fuels. As well as the challenge of change in transitioning away from fossil fuels, the industry also needs to manage ever more strict regulations governing emissions.

Jacquie Berryman Chairman, VLS

The advent of Euro 7 has created strong reaction amongst the European association of OEMs, ACEA, taking in to account the total emissions of both light and heavy-duty vehicles including brake pad and tyre wear, the regulation measures more than just the exhaust. This proposal by the EU Commission could cost up to 2,000 euros for cars and 12,000 euros for heavy duty vehicles alone.

At the same time the industry is still grappling with setting standards for electric vehicles. In the absence of industry standards led by bodies such as ACEA an API, individual OEM-led standards could cause fluid transferability or fluid servicing amongst vehicle owners. That could lead to higher costs for vehicle owners and higher costs for the industry.
