COMPANY PROFILE

Acting sustainably is ROWE’s responsibility Jeremy Aston-Phillips, Director, Rowe Motor Oil UK Ltd

Sustainability has been one of ROWE’s goals from the very beginning. When Michael Zehe founded the German company back in 1995, he had a vision to produce as sustainably as possible within the lubricant sector. Michael’s daughter, Dr. Alexandra Kohlmann, who has been managing the company with her father since 2018, continues to promote this philosophy today both inside and outside the organisation.

State-of-the-art lubricants plant Sustainability is not just about manufacturing and selling products that are ‘eco-friendly’. They run as a sustainable business, by considering the impact on both the planet and the people who work within the organisation.

The largest statement of our sustainability commitment was in 2014 when we opened a state-of-the-art sustainable manufacturing facility in Worms, Germany. Starting from the drawing- board, the vision was to achieve a plant that would create any product in a way that minimised its effect on the environment in every process, as a result every element of manufacture is measured against its energy consumption, waste and other potential impacts on the planet.

Here are a few examples of what they have done to achieve this: The factory was designed with 40 miles of pipework. These individual lines are dedicated to a specific product, thus saving the environment many flushing cycles for the pipes.

All raw materials are stored inside the building, thus requiring less energy to heat, especially in the cold German winters. This “waste heat” created as a bi-product of the manufacturing processes is used to keep the building and offices warm for employees.

Furthermore, the “waste heat” is so efficient that we have completely disposed of conventional heating systems in the production areas.

By recycling numerous raw and other materials such as cardboard for packaging and wood for pallets and by separating all waste created, this ensures it can be reprocessed where possible. Paper processes have been replaced by digital and the operation is well on the way to being totally paperless.

50% recycled containers Production of sustainable containers at the point of manufacturing reduces shipping and these containers are currently made from a minimum of 50% recycled plastic. This is ongoing development to further increase this proportion.

ROWE generates a significant part of its electricity from renewable sources, thanks to its 749 kWp photovoltaic system at the Worms plant and a 488 kWp one at the Bubenheim plant with further plans to increase this over time.

-compensated.” The company compensates for all unavoidable emissions by supporting various sustainability projects certified by the globally recognised “Gold Standard.”

Since 2017 the whole product range is fully “CO2
