EVENTS AGM 2023

Andreas Dodos, Certified Lubricating Grease Specialist, Technical Production, Eldon’s Lubricants

This years ELGI Annual General Meeting took place in the organisation’s home city of Amsterdam between the 29th of April and the 2nd of May.

Held at the Amsterdam Marriott Hotel, in the heart of the city, the meeting started on the Sunday morning with the working groups taking place. With Constantine Madius, from Axel Royal LLC, coordinating a packed room of up to 75 delegates attending the Food Lubricants, Test Methods, Particle Evaluation and Biobased working groups. Sofia Oberg, from 2Probity, who is the new co-chair of the food lubricants working group, together with Perry Peters from Matrix, brought a needed breath of fresh air to the meeting by actively encouraging participation by all attendees. The biobased working group appointed a new Chairperson, Roland Ardai from Axel Christiernsson as Eldon’s George Dodos has stepped back after having led the group for over ten years. Shell’s Olav Holger and Afton’s Joe Kaperick and Joe Kaperick are still in charge of the Test Methods and Particle Evaluation working group respectively. All in all, it can be said that even though most of the working groups have been active for a long time, interest is always there and this year all meetings were particularly interactive. Most participants are looking forward following up the discussions on line and during the ELGI autumn working group meeting later on in the year.

On Monday morning, ELGI President Terry Dicken welcomed delegates during the opening session and especially the two newly elected board members of the institute: Elsbeth van der Doel from Lanxess and BoConcept’s Mikael Kruse. Over the next one and a half days the delegates got the opportunity to listen and learn from some of the industries finest. Sustainability was part of the conference theme and a large number of lecturers embraced it, pointing out how important the topic is for the future of not only

our industry but for all aspects of our society. Vasilios Bakolas from the VDMA was the key note speaker, providing the downstream industries perspective and needs going into the future. One of the presentations that stood out was that of Peit Lugt from SKF. This was also the presentation that eventually was awarded the best paper award.

At the close of the event, two separate tours were organised. One to the Tata steel plant and one to the latest SKF R&D facilities. Participants this year were particularly impressed by the quality of the tours. A big thank you and bravo has to go out to both companies offering to host the conference delegates.

This year the AGM was extended for one additional day, for all members of the ELGI STC – Sustainability Techncal Consortium. This is the latest spin off of the ELGI. After the sucessful initiation and operation of the ERGTC (European Reach Grease Thickener Consortium) that has taken the industry lead in making sure the grease industry is REACH compliant, the importance of a common approach with regards to sustainability lead last year to the establishment of this group. Prof.Dr. Manfred Jungk is leading the consortium, that is curently operating five Task forces: Communication, Carbon Footpring, Life Cycle Analysis, End Users and End of Life. Any stakeholder in the lubricating grease industry is welcome to join the efforts of the group. Current members include, grease manufacturers, equipment suppliers, raw matterial suppliers, end users, organisations and consultants.

The next ELGI AGM will take place on the 15th to 18th of April 2024 in Madrid, Spain. Looking forward to seeing you all there.
