EDITORIAL Keep calm and carry on…
‘It is the moments that challenge us most that define us’ - I heard this recently, in relation to the Brexit machinations that are continuing in the UK and thought how aptly this maxim could be applied to the lubricants industry.
As I sat in on the presentations and keynotes at the 23rd ICIS World Base Oils and Lubricants Conference in London recently, this was particularly apparent. The packed, informative programme highlighted yet again the disruption that can impact our industry: volatile markets, fluctuating Group l and Group ll supplies, unpredictable trade sanctions, geopolitics, a regulatory minefield, ambitious environmental targets and an imminent technological revolution notwithstanding, our industry remains focused and committed; creating opportunities, adapting to change, overcoming obstacles.
And focusing on new opportunities is something that comes across loud and clear in my edited interview with Tracey Gardiner, the new VP of Chevron Base Oils; looking to the future and possibilities, not problems, makes for an optimistic outlook. The full conversation can be read in May’s digital exclusive.
Elsewhere in this issue we focus on the much maligned railway sector (which in the UK certainly often makes headlines for the wrong type of rain or snowfall, or too many leaves on the tracks) – we look at the benefits of oil condition monitoring for the rail industry and the impact of Top of Rail (TOR) materials to improve rail safety, reduce squealing train wheels and provide consistent track/wheel friction, reducing slipping and vibration.
Lube Tech examines the iodine value as a measure of the stability of ester base oils, and we look at Calcium Sulphonate grease as an alternative to Lithium grease soaps. And with sustainability always on the agenda, we feature an article on biolubricants and its terminology, with an overview of the corresponding requirements in relation to current regulations.

Moving ahead, Lube is delighted to be supporting both the UNITI Mineral Oil Technology Congress and the 2019 ELGI-AGM, as media partner once again; the events take place in Stuttgart and Athens respectively in early April with details available in this issue and on our website. Lube is also looking forward to its new media partnership with CHEMUK2019; the inaugural expo will take place on 1/2 May in Harrogate, UK. UKLA’s Director General, David Wright will deliver a keynote speech on ‘The Future of Chemical Regulation in the UK’ so do visit and say hi if you can make it.
There is much to look forward to... 2019 is shaping up to be an exciting year, and not just because GIMS happened! (but more about my visit to the Geneva International Motor Show in the June issue!) Until then, embrace the challenges!
