All 11 samples were evaluated in the new test method and an example creep curve result is shown in Figure 4 below.


The TOR materials are found to have a high overall traction coefficient as expected, compared to the flange and dual products. The gradient of the curve is also slightly greater for the TOR materials. This method holds promise for the evaluation of new TOR materials before field trials, and to allow the development of new TOR materials in a fast and accurate manner in the lab.


This test method is now going through a round robin procedure, organised by the Railway Standards Safety Board (RSSB), European Lubricating Grease Institute (ELGI) and PCS Instruments. If successful this method may be included in the EN specification for TOR materials as an informative test.
