ICIS World Base Oils and Lubricants Conference 2019

Trade wars, sustainability and new legislation from the IMO 2020 to tightening lube specifications were front and centre at the 23rd ICIS World Base Oils & Lubricants Conference in London in February.

Morris Lubricants’ managing director told the pre-conference seminar that companies had buried their heads in the sand on Brexit but should prepare with suppliers on UK storage and REACH, alongside watching forex moves. Experts from Eversheds and Accuity drove home the challenges of sanctions on global trade.

The conference heard from oil majors, OEMs and analysts in a mix of panel talks and keynote speeches on issues from electric cars and evolving interchange guidelines and tests, to the struggles for Group I base oils and a trend towards Group II adoption in Europe.

Chevron’s Patti Leigh posed the question of IMO low sulphur shipping rules “testing” the viability of

Group I plants while Group II and III are advantaged.

Long-awaited news of the Group II plant in Rotterdam being “commercially ready” came from ExxonMobil’s Sylvie Houry. SK Lubricants unveiled plans to expand its Spanish and Indonesian base oils plants.

Nissan’s Takumaru Sagawa said OEMs need more technical developments in lubricants to improve fuel economy and reduce CO2

, while Shell’s Bob

Mainwaring called for collaboration: “Engine components should be designed alongside the lubricant.”

7th Annual CIS Base Oils and Lubricants Conference

Last year, the Russian lubes market saw a sales growth of 1.2% compared to 2017, exceeding the average European growth rate of 0.5%.

The CIS Base Oil and Lubricants conference is your entry ticket to the vast Russian and CIS market of base oils and lubricants. Co-hosted with Rosneft Lubricants, one of the largest lubes producers in Russia, this event brings together industry professionals from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.

This year, the conference will focus on implementation, quality and improved service for end-users. Companies like Rusal, Severstal and Russian Railways will share their requirements and showcase the best practices of partnership with lubes suppliers.

The conference will gather over 150 delegates representing the entire industry value chain. Quality presentations will be given by key regional players on all aspects of the industry, from global trends to cooling fluids, and there will be plenty of chances for face-to- face connections, the best way to assess where the growth areas are in this geographical region.

The Re-refining Focus Day is co-located with the CIS Base Oil and Lubricants conference. It is specifically designed to address business opportunities in the sector of used oils re-refining, with projects, market intelligence and case studies presented by leading experts in used oil upcycling.
