Non-compliant claims still causing issues for lubricants
The Verification of Lubricant Specifications (VLS) is continuing to tackle issues concerning misleading or incorrect packaging on packaged lubricants. Three cases have recently been concluded, all relating to complaints about the product’s description and ability to deliver what it claimed.
Case 152 related to the Vetech 5W30 SSL PRO Universal Performance Multi-Fleet ILSAC Standard Service Oil, marketed by GSF Car Parts Ltd, and alleged non-compliance regarding marketing claims reflected in the Technical Data Sheet.
Case 156 related to the Vetech 5W30 ESL PRO High Performance Multi-Fleet Extended Service Oil, also marketed by GSF Car Parts Ltd, and a complaint concerning marketing claims in the Technical Data Sheet, and it was alleged that no formulation was capable of meeting all the applications and performance claims.
Case VLS010157 related to a 15W40 heavy duty diesel engine oil, Agri Plant MS Ultra, manufactured by Aztec Oils, and a complaint concerning the use of outdated 2008 engine oil sequences specified by the European Association of OEMs (ACEA) and the application of year date markers on the product data sheet.
In all three cases, VLS’ Technical Review Panel upheld the complaints and worked with the companies involved to make changes to bring the products into compliance.
David Wright, Company Secretary of VLS said: “Modern, sophisticated engines require specifically tailored lubricants. It can be tempting to create lubricants which cover huge swathes of the car parc, but any claims must be backed up by evidence to ensure that end users can be confident that products are fit for purpose.”
