I know that innovation is nothing new. Lubricants manufacturers and developers are always on the look out for innovative talent to join their teams and the move towards more speciality lubricants such as those suitable for hybrid vehicles is all part of their long-term planning. We forecast there will be demand for more innovation in the industry, for example, some manufacturers are looking at developing lubricants that are capable of lubricating an engine and cooling high energy density battery systems. They’re still investing in lubricants, just with a close eye on reading the future.

A hybrid solution

The focus amongst our clients is skewed towards hybrid rather than purely electric vehicles. Market pressures including the lack of infrastructure (for example charging points), the limitations of battery technology and the recycling potential of electric vehicles mean a number of our clients predict greater demand for specialist lubricants for hybrid vehicles in the medium term.

Based on this prediction we expect technical and sales people, who have expertise in synthetic and high-grade lubricants for the growing hybrid vehicle market, will be in demand. More specialised lubricants will be required that can be used in conjunction with copper wires, electric modules and speciality plastics in hybrid vehicles and this requires specialist knowledge for both product development and marketing.

In hybrid cars, although the engine is smaller, it is compact and encapsulated meaning it requires lubrication for both heat and ageing stability. If the engine has a turbocharger then there is also a need for lubrication to protect against deposits (FUCHS, Electric Cars – new technology calls for new lubrication, 2017). These developments will shape the recruitment market.

Future demand

In the short term we do not see, nor predict that we will see a reduction in demand for lubricants talent for either technical or sales and marketing roles. Regardless of the development of electric vehicles, organisations are increasingly looking for innovation and for specialised

chemists – and for sales professionals with a technical background who can take these products to market.

Following a lively Q&A session with Tesla’s product team, we enjoyed refreshments in the beautiful showroom before going for a test drive. Out on the roads, I was amazed by the power of the car as our driver showcased it’s acceleration of 0-60mph in 2.34 seconds! The evolution of electric cars certainly provided us all with food for thought on the night. There are many interesting questions that remain unanswered but the demand for top lubricants talent will always be there.
