Annual Dinner 2017:
A time to look back and look ahead
Deborah Grigg, Manager Secretariat, UKLA
The UKLA Annual Dinner always has a big reputation to live up to but with tickets selling out for this year’s event in record time it felt even bigger. If you ever want to be in a room filled with the great and the good of the UK Lubricants Industry this really is the place to be and tickets to the event were a much sought after commodity.
Held once again at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower the main sponsor of this year’s event was Q8 Oils, with other sponsors including MKR, Petronas, Millers Oils, SBZ Corporation, Moove Lubricants, Oil Recruitment, IMCD, Multisol, Petrico, and GEO Specialty Chemicals.
Honoured guests included Valentina Serra-Holm, President of the European lubricants federation UEIL, Roger Cresswell Director- General of the Oil Recycling Association, Terry Dicken Chairman of the European grease federation ELGI, Susan Hancock Secretary- General of the European Technical Association ATIEL and Andy Roberts Director of the downstream oil association UKPIA.
However, the main message of the evening was how the UKLA serves its membership both at home and abroad by working to safeguard and enhance the reputation of the lubricants sector. UKLA is actively engaged with policymakers on joint projects including the Reach Cross-Sector industry group with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Oil Care Campaign working with the Environment Agency, and the Nanotechnology Supply Chain Forum with the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. UKLA also works with the Health & Safety Executive on the Metalworking Fluid Product Stewardship Group.
The event was hosted by Perrier Comedy Award winner Dominic Holland, who kept us entertained with tales of his dog walking antics and his prowess on his son’s scooter (resulting in a broken leg).
Set against the background of a changing political landscape with the UK negotiating its exit from the European Union, this year UKLA’s policy and lobbying activities are of heightened strategic importance to the continued success of the lubricants sector. Already UKLA plays a strategic role working with the European association UEIL on policy initiatives including representation and lobbying the EU Commission on policy and taxation matters and also represents its members’ interests on UEIL’s Health, Safety and Environment committees, as well as the Technical and Competition committees. On external bodies, UKLA sits as the UEIL representative on the Quality Management and Standards committee of the European Technical Association,
