Lubricants: The LUBRAX Brand In the early 1970s Petrobras decided to produce lube oils in-house to meet its own requirements. The construction of a plant next to the Duque de Caxias Refinery in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, was followed by the creation of the lube management unit responsible for developing this new product line. The LUBRAX line reached the Brazilian market in January 1973 with the launch of Marbrax, its line of marine lubricating oils. In 1977 its subsidiary Petrobras Distribuidora took over management and control of the lube plant in 1977.
Since then over the last 34 years, LUBRAX has been accumulating success, international expansion and leadership in the market.
Over this period LUBRAX’s development included: -
The first product in the automotive line was MG-1 for gasoline engines. In June 1973 the lube based on the world's most
advanced technology was marketed. The launching of the local lube line was a milestone for the Brazilian market.
The following year, the brand was consolidated when MG-4 was launched, an oil better known as LUBRAX 4, which quickly gained an 8% market share. The company's sales volume of the high quality LUBRAX line of lubricants soon increased and by 1978 the brand had gained a 12% share of the domestic market.
The LUBRAX brand lineup was expanded to include eight products for gasoline and diesel engines and transmission oils for a wide variety of applications in the automotive, industrial, aviation, railroad and offshore areas. In total Petrobras produces more than 120 different types of lubes.
In January 2002, Petrobras began manufacturing and distributing its LUBRAX lubricants via the Argentine plant of the company Eg3. LUBRAX products were exported not only to Argentina, but also to Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.
Currently, the LUBRAX brand has the highest market share in terms of its total sales volume in Brazil. Sindicom data
