prerequisite for the additive choice. Ciba has on-going activities to provide test data for additives meeting the EEL criteria in relevant ester base fluids.
A specific combination of various additives often leads to a higher performance level because additives act together. The use of synergies, as well as the limitation of antagonisms, has to be carefully checked. Some additives are multifunctional (e.g. corrosion inhibitor & EP-AW additive) and can contribute to different requirements with just one additive.
LUKOIL joins ATIEL
LLK International B.V. (OAO LUKOIL’s 100% subsidiary) has joined ATIEL, the Technical Association of the European Lubricants Industry (Association Technique de L'Industrie Européene des Lubrifiants).
ATIEL is a non-profit organization of engine oil producing companies and vendors operating in Europe. In addition to LLK International, 16 largest global engine oil manufacturers including BPCastrol, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Total, Shell and others are already members of the association.
ATIEL solves technical issues concerning European engine oil industry, establish rules of engine oil exchangeability, coordinate compromise decisions with engine producers and additives developers, and elaborate regulations and tests for new engine oil specifi- cations. ATIEL publishes an Industrial Code of Practice, guidelines for engine oil producers complying with ACEA requirements (the European Automobile Manufacturers Association).
‘Joining ATIEL is recognizing OAO LUKOIL as an equal member of the European ‘engine oil’ market, which provides an opportunity to our company, represented by LLK International, to take an active part in creation of the European engine oil quality standards, and build a close cooperation with engine and industrial equipment producers’, said Vladimir Nekrasov, OAO LUKOIL’s First Vice- President.

Celsa Steel increase their business with Houghton
Houghton plc, a world-leading supplier of industrial production lubricants and fluid management services, has recently introduced their fire-resistant hydraulic fluid, Houghto-Safe HFB100, into the mill control systems at Celsa Steels’ Castle Works site.
Celsa Steel UK is the largest producer of reinforcement bars in the United Kingdom and one of the largest manufacturers of other steel long products. Celsa’s Rod and Bar Mill at the Castle Works site in South Wales is capable of producing 890,000 tonnes of varied reinforcing bar, coil and wire rod per annum.
Celsa Steel UK changed to Houghton’s Houghto-Safe HFB100 invert emulsion because of its excellent performance and the technical support that Houghton could offer.
Houghto-Safe HFB100 reduces fire risks where hydraulic equipment operates near flames and hot surfaces. It is particularly suited to systems that require a balanced combination of fire resistance, cost and good lubrication, making it ideal for the application at Castle Works.
Houghton already supplies Houghto-Safe 620 fire resistant hydraulic fluid and Mouldlubric 8035 release lubricant to the melt shop at Celsa’s nearby Tremorfa plant, where cast steel billets are produced. Houghton has recently installed storage tanks and distribution pipe work for these products to comply with the latest oil storage regulations.
In addition, Houghton has been contracted to manage the complete lubrication system at Celsa’s Tremorfa site. Houghton’s full time site lubrication technician is supported by their in-house Engineering Division, whose extensive lubrication and engineering experience has established Houghton as a key resource in the UK steel industry.
Rob Davey Account Manager, Houghton Plc, ‘We believe in providing our customers with better safety and with cost benefits from reduced consumption and environmental impact. Our ability to supply high technology fire-resistant products and engineering support helps us to do just that.’
