A slimmed-down Top 50 is an unappetising starter for 2025

ielsen BookScan’s Food & Drink category is one that often bookends the calendar year with
strong sales thanks to Christmas gifting of the biggest celebrity chefs, followed by New Year resolu- tions to eat more healthily. However, the first 12 weeks of 2025 have seen a less-than-robust start. The category has cooked up
sales of £17.4m, down 9.1% (£1.7m) compared with the same period in 2024, while volume has seen a bigger decline, dropping 14.3% – the equivalent of just over 200,000 copies. Compare that with the wider market, which is broadly flat (a bump of £297,468, representing an increase of
0.1%), and the picture looks more concerning. The biggest title in the category
for 2025 is Jamie Oliver’s Easy Air Fryer which has notched up sales of £1.1m, £400,000 lower than 2024’s lead title, Nathan Anthony’s Bored of Lunch: Healthy Slow Cooker. A rare January release for Oliver sees his sales jump 300%, although without Easy Air Fryer, his sales are down 15.6% year-on- year to date. Anthony, the creator of the Bored
of Lunch brand, has seen his sales drop by £1.5m, compared with the start of 2024, largely due to there being no new release in January of this year – his latest title Bored of Lunch: Six Ingredient Slow Cooker was released a month earlier in
