Literary
Susanna Kwan ( 1) Awake in the Floating City Simon & Schuster UK, 31st, £16.99, HB, 9781398543355
In a future San Francisco, transformed by years of rain,
40-year-old lapsed artist Bo is grieving the community she has lost to the catastrophic flooding and preparing to leave, but on the day of her planned departure a note is slipped under her door by her 130-year-old neighbour asking for help. Unable to board the ship that could save her life, Bo decides to stay. For fans of Station Eleven and Birnam Wood, this is a thought-provoking, poignant read.
1 Historical crime & thriller
Laura Shepherd-Robinson ( 3) The Art of a Lie Mantle, 10th, £18.99, HB, 9781529053722 The latest from The Square of Sevens author is nothing short of exceptional. Following the murder of her husband in what looks like a violent street robbery, confectionery shop owner Hannah is plunged into 18th-century London’s murky underworld and an intricate web of lies and love, as the cat-and-mouse chase between her and enigmatic stranger William reaches a dramatic conclusion. Clearly meticulously researched and with writing as carefully, deliciously crafted as the sweet treats filling its pages, I adored this.
