Hi-fi distributor Henley Audio introduces its new Music Crates and reveals how these innovative systems will help dealers benefi t from the vinyl revival by offering a better retail experience

he resurgence of vinyl shows no signs of slowing. Rivalling the comebacks of Red Rum in ’73, Botham in ’81, Liverpool in ’05, and last year’s New England Patriots, vinyl’s resurgence equated to four million record sales in 2017. This marks a decade of consecutive growth for LPs and sees sales at their highest since 1991. This quiet revolution brings with it huge opportunities for the audio retail sector. In addition to seeing former turntable owners looking to get back in the game, we are toasting the birth of a new generation of disc spinners. Inspired by events such as Record Store Day and new vinyl releases from contemporary artists, Generation Y is discovering there’s no better way to find new music than spending time in a good record shop. However, buying a turntable can be daunting. A potential turntable owner, buoyed with enthusiasm, sweeps into the store. But after the conversation deviates into amplifiers, bearings, cartridges and phono stages – the door out and Spotify on a smartphone have never looked so tempting. We must not waste these golden opportunities or we risk losing Generation Y for good. Equally, we mustn’t dumb it down and sell a handful of electronics randomly dropped into a plastic suitcase masquerading as a record player. Do this and we’ll likely lose Generation Z as well as Y. We need to tailor our advice to the buyer,
providing, there and then, a solution that looks great, is simple to set up and sounds brilliant. For this reason, Henley Audio has launched Music Crate systems. Drawing from our stable of
premium brands, these carefully matched sets deliver the benefits of two-channel systems, but in one box. Specially curated by our technical team, each issue will only be available for a limited time. All Music Crate systems will also be effortlessly simple to set up, and we guarantee that they will deliver a sound to knock the socks off that record player in a suitcase.
First edition Take our debut Music Crate system – the ‘Issue One’. It comprises a Pro-Ject Juke Box E turntable and Pro-Ject Speaker Box 5 loudspeakers. The buyer gets a premium all-in-one turntable – complete with built-in amplification and an integrated Bluetooth receiver – and matching stereo speakers. The set- up process – other than unwrapping and smiling – involves installing the deck’s belt and hooking up a couple of cables. Simple. And this is a ‘proper’ turntable with an 8.6in aluminium tonearm with sapphire bearings, Ortofon OM 5E cartridge, belt drive and a low-vibration motor with reliable speed stability. And the accompanying speakers not only sound great, they perfectly match the deck’s livery. Upcoming Music Crate systems will continue the
trouble-free theme. Henley Audio is the exclusive UK distributor of a compelling collection of historic brands, including Jamo, Klipsch and Pro-Ject Audio, so expect a line of vinyl-conscious set-ups that will always deliver on convenience and desirability, yet never at the cost of premium performance. Be it a USB output for recording vinyl to Mac or PC, or a turntable that can stylishly attach to the wall, or powered speakers that house a phono stage, there will be a system to suit.
“Life is complicated enough, so buying new audio should be a simple pleasure,” said Henley MD Laurence Armstrong. “A visit to a hi-fi store can be daunting, so let’s pull together to make everyone feel welcome. Our Music Crate line streamlines the buying process, yet at no compromise to ultimate performance and enjoyment.”

Top tips for demonstrating Music Crates in-store:
1 Be sure to set up the Music Crates properly
Most of our systems won’t take long to set up, but it’s worth taking the time to get it right.
2 Give the speakers room to breathe
The strength in good hi-fi is found in the stereo presentation. Giving a metre either side of the turntable for the speakers will reap huge rewards when you do your demo.
3 Buy some tunes
You don’t need a box of vinyl, but something old that everyone knows alongside something current that gets the family involved will help you impress your customers.
4 Sell the convenience
Point out that you’re selling an easy solution. No multi-box set-ups with cables everywhere. Just a turntable and some good speakers.
5 Enjoy it! 9
Jamo DS4 This is just the beginning of our Music Crate line
but system building is far from new to us. At Henley, we have always worked with complementary brands – to us, it makes perfect sense – so we have in fact always offered system solutions. Now, though, they have a nice name. Whatever Music Crate they choose, our potentially inhibited member of the vinyl revolution still marches out of the store – but with a box under their arm and the sale in your till. Nice work, comrade.
