Anton Hettich dies aged 91


MANAGING PARTNER and chairman of the Hettich Group, Anton Hettich, passed away on April 24, aged 91, after a short illness. In a statement, the company said: “The death of Anton Hettich leaves a big gap. His family, all the shareholders, the advisory board, the management and the entire Hettich team mourn the loss of a great personality and will continue to develop the Hettich Group in his spirit.”


Anton Hettich had been with the family business since 1949 as a co-partner. In 1959, after the death of his father, he became a member of the management at the age of 27. After the legal separation from Hettich’s parent


company, Anton Hettich became chairman of the management board of Paul Hettich GmbH & Co. KG in Herford. He then joined the advisory board in 1991 until he ended his tenure as chairman in 2016.


Anton Hettich was committed to social issues and was involved in a variety of entrepreneurial activities. He received two honours – the Hessian Order of Merit in 2006 and the Federal Cross of Merit in 2014.


In 1992, the Anton Hettich Foundation was set up to promote the education and training of young people. He worked with his son Andreas and increased the foundation capital to €14 million (£12m) in 2019 on his 90th birthday. Anton Hettich was said to be committed to the company and have a wealth of ideas. His contributions helped develop the company’s international success, with many technical developments and new sites created under his leadership. Outside of the company, he held many honorary offices, including chairman of the East Westphalia-Lippe Entrepreneurs Group for 10 years.


Bette reports strong bounce-back in 2020 and steps up its commitment to sustainability


GERMAN LUXURY bathroom manufacturer Bette has reported an increase in sales in 2020 and confirmed its commitment to sustainability with a new environmental officer and plans to switch its factory to 100% solar energy.


In a UK press briefing, Sven Rensinghoff, head of marketing and product management at Bette in Germany, said that in 2020 Bette grew its turnover by 5% to almost €90 million (£77.5m) compared with 2019. Rensinghoff added: “Over the past


year, we grew a total of around 5% compared to 2019 to almost €90 million turnover. The German market contributed significantly, with a plus of 10%. Internationally, we lost a little bit because of the Covid situation.” He added that international sales were around 25% of turnover in 2020. “For this year in 2021, we are very optimistic and positive, and we started well with a lot of orders and turnover up 7%. Germany and our international markets grew at the same level. Business in many markets is better than in the first part of the pandemic. If we can get our raw materials on the procurement side, this positive trend will go on. We are convinced that end

consumers in every market want to spend on their homes and so we are very positive for Bette in general.” Samantha Lewis, country manager for the UK at Bette said: “Bette UK remained operational throughout all of the lockdowns. We had a strong bounce-back at the end of 2020 and that continued into 2021.”


During the briefing Bette said it had been stepping up its environmental commitment and said it intends to have all its energy produced through solar power in the next year. Rensinghoff added: “We appointed a sustainability officer last year. He has been working on all of our processes.”
