Ocean Bathrooms, Poole

Poole, in Dorset, might be thousands of miles away from the nearest jungle but it was still the main inspiration for Ocean Bathrooms’ new showroom. Joe Mühl, MD of contracts and commercial projects, explains the thinking behind its design and layout

he new Ocean Bathrooms showroom, in Poole – the third studio from this family-owned business – is all about the experience and engaging the senses. Apart from the senses that you’d usually expect to be activated in a bathroom showroom – like sight and touch – here, your sense of smell and sound are also engaged. This happens through the array of signature scent aromatherapy diffusers dotted throughout the showroom and calming background music. Joe Mühl (pictured), managing director contracts

explains that they wanted to create a memorable customer experience in the showroom. “We’ve taken inspiration from studios in Clerkenwell – London’s trendy design district,” he says. “With the overall design theme, along with the addition of our signature scent wafting through, it makes it a really cool space.” The showroom itself is located in Poole, Dorset, in a building called the Greenhouse. It is surrounded by other retail units but, stepping into the showroom almost feels like you’re somewhere far more exotic than Dorset, thanks to the cedar wood wall cladding, greenery and bold Margo & Mya jungle-themed sofa.

As a local, independent retailer, under- standing the target market is key. With this in mind, not wanting to overwhelm consumers, they pared back the number of products on display compared with its other showrooms. “People don’t need thousands of choices,” Mühl explains. “From what I’ve spent the past couple of years looking at, you don’t need hundreds of toilets on show, for example, as you only ever sell the same two or three.” The walls feature eye-catching recesses with strip lighting that doubles up as display areas for a range of

different products,

including basins and taps. “The niches are an eye-catching aspect with the cedar cladding and all of the basins and the bath, showers, taps all inside the niches,” he says. “Most consumers are very visual – they like to look at the shape or design of a basin, but they don’t need to put their hands in it to see how it feels. So, the niche displays give them that option.”

Mühl and his team understand how important experience is to the consumer’s buying journey. Therefore, the showroom has also been designed for customers to experience products, so it features things like working showers. There is even a working Geberit Aquaclean installed in the public bathroom so customers can actually try out a shower toilet before they buy. Other items on display that have caught the attention of visitors are the Majestic Beyond Bespoke mirrored shower doors as well as the luxurious CL1 Dornbracht tap adorned with Swarovski crystals. According to Mühl, the response from customers to the new showroom has been very positive. “They love the space,” he says. “We’ve deliberately kept it minimal to showcase the products in the best way by highlighting textures and finishes, as well as product.”
