says: “The current trend for smaller, more compact housing in the UK means that every inch of expensive space needs to be fully utilised. This is particularly important in bedrooms, where there is much competition for space.”


Converting an entire room into a dressing room is an option for some homeowners, giving designers the luxury of styling the whole room. And islands are not just for kitchens, as a central unit is an opportunity to add in extra storage with a decorative display case or as a space to layout outfits or sit down to put on shoes.


Creating areas of open shelving to showcase shoes, handbags and accessories is another popular option. But while some items should be on display all the time, some – such as suitcases – are better hidden away, which may require a bespoke solution. Dressing tables, mirrors and potentially make-up storage are all options, especially if space in the bathroom is limited. In addition, joining a walk-in wardrobe to an en suite creates a functional movement in the room and an opportunity for a cohesive design theme.


A wardrobe should be as personal as the style of the clothes that will be stored, which is a perfect opportunity to incorporate elements of the client’s personality. “Customisation is key for on-trend appeal and current bedroom trends,” says Simon Collyns, retail and marketing director at Symphony Group. “Also include a personalised look with statement wallpaper, layered lighting, a decorative headboard and brass or bronze handles for doors and drawers.” As for general bedroom trends, Richard Evans, development director at Crown Imperial, gives a rundown on popular items: “We’re seeing a focus

on contemporary styles and clean lines. Customers are increasingly looking to multifunctional designs. Working from home has become the ‘new normal’ for many, and a dual bedroom and dedicated work zone is a growing trend for those where space is at a premium.”


The style of doors is also key, says Nuala Brady, group marketing manager at BA: “Key areas this year will therefore


focus on the benefits of well- considered door design. Enhanced by a range of options, we find that pocket and sliding doors remain the front- runners in hard-working bedrooms that need to capitalise on every inch of available storage.”


Lighting is another critical area many manufacturers highlighted. Simple strip lighting can elevate a bedroom, as it does in a kitchen, or with sensor lighting in cupboards and wardrobes.

Healey at Trend Interiors shares this advice: “We would always recommend that the retailer find an area of ‘dissatisfaction’ with the client’s existing bedroom and outline what could be improved in terms of current bedroom storage for their ideal scenario. For some clients, storage will be almost non-existent, so it makes sense to establish individual needs regarding what they would like in terms


of future storage requirements.” Showing a client how easy a bedroom installation can be may well clinch the sale. “To help aid bedroom sales, retailers can discuss how much quicker the installation can be and how less intrusive it is,” suggests Hanwell at PWS. “It’s also really beneficial


to show how much


additional storage a customer can gain from fitted furniture versus a standalone wardrobe. And it’s reassuring for the customer to know any bedroom will be the same quality as their kitchen.” The easiest way to start those conversations is in the showroom with a bedroom


display. Symphony’s


Collyns says: “Bedroom furniture displays are essential as often people buy what they see on display. The best displays look and feel different from the kitchen element of the showroom.” And he suggests adding some styling elements like soft furnishings, carpets, rugs, and beds to help set the scene. Once you start to become known for bedrooms, there are many opportunities


for future sales and


projects. Bodsworth at Daval Furniture gives the final push of encouragement for retailers on the fence about bedrooms,


saying: “It is worth
