Grace from Above: Mercy Air Supports Africans in Need

MORE THAN FLYING

True proof of the organization’s care for the people of the region that it serves has risen out of the COVID-19 crisis. Because of the virus, many of the borders Mercy Air crosses from its base in South Africa have been on lockdown. The lockdowns have exacerbated the poverty in already impoverished communities surrounding

the air base. Not being able to fly their helicopters did not mean the teams could not serve. Mercy Air pilots, mechanics, staff, and crew members packed care packages, then jumped in trucks and drove to needy communities to distribute the assistance packages. To date, during the flight-restricted periods Mercy Air teams have delivered 75 metric tons of emergency food to poor townships and

orphanages in their base’s immediate area. “If we were only interested in flying, we wouldn’t have done that. Although our team is made up of aviation specialists, when we could not fly, we looked around to see where and how we could be a blessing to others,” remarked Reuter. As of this writing, the borders are now opening and flights are resuming.

A personal note: several Rotorcraft Pro team members and I have served in missionary capacities in places such as Haiti and Central America, therefore our hearts and prayers lean towards organizations like Mercy Air, as well as the companies that support them. In scripture, 1 Peter 4:10 says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” As Mercy Air and others continue to use their aviation gifts to bless those in need, we at Rotorcraft Pro will continue to spotlight such organizations.
