Located in the North Atlantic Ocean just south of the Arctic Circle, Iceland is known for its unparalleled natural beauty. Three tectonic plates, including the larger North American and Eurasian, produce volcanic activity that attracts visitors throughout the year. The island is home to fewer than 400,000 residents, yet attracts about 2.2 million visitors annually. Reykjavík Domestic Airport houses the fleet of the Icelandic Coast Guard (ICG) that utilizes three Airbus H225s and one fixed-wing Dash 8 Q300 maritime surveillance aircraft.
“Last year, the ICG completed a record number of 314 helicopter missions, with the busiest period being when tourists visit in June, July, and August,” said Lárusson, ICG director general for nearly two decades. “The majority of these missions are for medical evacuations (medevac) and search and rescue (SAR) operations on land, while 30% are conducted at sea. We are fully equipped and prepared to handle the high demand during the summer months.”
