The Year of Young People

Following on from the success of last year’s event, John Swinney, Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Education is once again making a keynote speech at the Education Buildings Scotland conference. “In this, the ‘Year of the Young People’ the focus will be on all learning environments which support our world-leading education system.”


Opening day one of the conference, Mr Swinney will be welcoming Scottish built environment and policy professionals together from Early Years, schools, colleges and universities to discuss, debate and refl ect on the key achievements and challenges since the event took place last year. We will be asking ‘What now? Where are we going from here? How are we going to achieve it?’


In partnership with The Scottish Government, the conference programme has been reworked across the two days to provide delegates with a more natural fl ow in-between sessions. We will be exploring Early Years, lessons learnt, inspiring


teaching spaces, technology, colleges and universities. New for 2018, we will also be looking at the repurposing of existing buildings as well as health and wellbeing.


In the ‘Value of Good Design’ and ‘Building Better Learning Establishments’ sessions, we will hear from Andy Dailly, Head of School Building at The Scottish Government and Grant Robertson, Senior Associate Director for the Scottish Futures Trust.


On day one, In the ‘Extending Learning Benefi ts by Design’ session, Shane Cryer from Saint-Gobain Ecophon will be using data from European studies to look at the importance of good acoustics for collaborative learning spaces. Also in this session we will be hearing from Ian van Duivenbode, Senior Engineer at Ramboll who will be looking at ‘Energy, Fresh Air and Daylight’ focussing in particular on the Queensferry High School in Edinburgh. This school is embracing ‘world-fi rst’ research and trials to drive best practice in realising

benefi ts in this critical aspect of environmental design. Ian has led the study with input from the latest developments in the UK and from Europe. He will be presenting on the aims and outcomes of this exciting project as well as its lessons for both education and construction.
