Education Buildings Journal

MM Sustainable Design will be joining him in this session to discuss key opportunities and challenges associated with delivering Welsh educational projects to the WELL Building Standard. Simon Trew, Stride Treglown and Ross Williams, Morgan Sindall will tell us about their refurbishment and expansion project at the Pentrehafod Secondary School in Swansea. This £16m scheme (versus £24m for a new build area equivalent) demonstrates that extensive remodelling and refurbishment of a live school site is possible and can deliver an affordable and sustainable alternative to a new build.

Closing day 2 of the conference, the two sessions running concurrently are ‘Learning Environments’ and the ‘Value of Good Design’.

Trystan Williams, Principal at Venturers’ Academy in Bristol, an All-through school for children with autism, will be chairing the session on ‘Learning Environments’. He will be sharing his experiences on how school leaders are doing their upmost to modify school buildings to maximise student’s

social and academic progress. He will also talk about how working with architects and building contractors can help transform the lives of society’s most vulnerable children.

And fi nally, Professor Wayne Forster will be chairing the ‘Value of Good Design’ session with Neil MacOmish, Board Director at Scott Brownrigg. They will explore the learning environment, looking beyond the boundaries of current school design.

There are also some fringe events taking place on Monday 18 June. Both Scott Brownrigg and Gleeds will be co-hosting a networking and drinks reception at Kuku bar from 6.30pm. IBI Group along with CUBRIC and Cardiff University are hosting a ‘Building Tour’ and drinks reception at CUBRIC, which will feature short presentations by CUBRIC and Richard Golledge, IBI Architect and Studio Director. You can also hear more from Richard when he presents the fi ndings from their in-house international ‘4Labs4Cities’ post occupancy study in the ‘Do Our Buildings Perform Well?’ session on Tuesday 19 June in the morning.
