Education Buildings Wales

Kathleen Dean @EduEstWales

The inaugural Education Buildings Wales conference and exhibition is taking place next week. In partnership with the Welsh Government it features more than 30 speakers over 2 days at Cardiff University. The 10-session conference will focus on the funding, design, build, management and maintenance of schools, colleges and universities across Wales. From early years up to university level, the event will bring together Welsh education built environment and policy professionals under one roof.

The day will kick off with a ‘Question Time’ panel session which will feature panelists from the Welsh Government alongside higher education representatives. Karsan Vaghani, Deputy Director of Estates at Cardiff University and Andrea Pennock from Aberystwyth University will set the scene for the conference by outlining some of the key achievements and challenges faced within the education sector across Wales. They will share personal achievements and priorities from their perspectives and

open the debate about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead to the audience.

Throughout the afternoon we will hear from Gareth Long, Director at the-learning-crowd in the ‘New School Curriculum’ session who will be looking at classroom environments; do existing and more traditional class environments found in many schools facilitate the new curriculum, or do they inhibit the range of learning styles that will engage and motivate students? Will the creation of increased fl exibility enhance the student learning experience and increase the confi dence of young people?

We will also hear from Chris Britten, Head Teacher at Ysgol Y Deri who will be speaking alongside Jan Taylor from HLM Architects. They will discuss new teaching trends in SEN schools, the new technologies and required infrastructure to achieve success, and how the well-designed external school environment can play a fundamental role in the education of children.
