Education Buildings Journal

creation of the building itself using local resources and labour, to the social value of a school and the use of the facilities by the community all must be examined.

The Colleges and Universities conference includes sessions on: Large Campuses – Rationalisation, Planning, Procurement and Supply Chain, HEDQF Session, and Repurposing of Existing Buildings.

Estate Rationalisation is increasingly evident, particularly across large campuses. Results of rationalisation and examples will be given by those undergoing this work or by those who have achieved rationalisation targets. Planning is a perennially popular topic. Examples concerning the planning of a range of different projects, including a whole university masterplan, to appropriate planning for next generation learning spaces, will be used to exemplify the approaches used. The collapse of Carillion earlier this year has raised questions in relation to the

management of procurement on very large projects. The client, and the contractor view will be given on this subject, providing a perspective from both sides of the fence, and will include discussion on the requirement for social value, sustainability, ethical considerations, and fi nancial accountability.

Following a common theme within the schools conference stream, the session on Repurposing of Existing Buildings in the university estate will also feature examples of recently completed projects, including The Old Gym at the University of Birmingham. The Higher Education Design Quality Forum will also lead a session in the colleges and university conference stream.

The Good Estate Management open theatre within the exhibition covers a range of subjects, including BIM, asset management, use of digitisation, fi re safety, condition surveys, achieving sustainability, and
