Education Buildings Journal

The 2018 conference will feature over 100 industry leading speakers

specialist teaching environments for pupils who have clinically diagnosed mental and behavioural conditions.

The Value of Good Design cross-conference session will be curated and delivered by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) who are supporting Education Estates this year.

Providing security in schools, and the public spaces that form part of university campuses, presents a many-layered security challenge. Covering environments that can be effectively locked down and protected while in operation, to environments in which that approach is not appropriate but where security is important nonetheless, requires balance. Protecting our Learners will give delegates expert advice on the range of higher-end security threats facing the nation. Physical and personnel security countermeasures that can be adopted in the design, construction, management and operation of facilities will also be discussed.

For the fi rst time, this year’s Education Estates will be approached from a new perspective through the international cross- conference session, with expertise and case studies from New Zealand, Abu Dhabi and Europe.

The Schools conference programme will cover the following topics: Urban Environments/Mixed Use sites, Construction and Delivery Models, Building and Maintaining Schools Across the UK, and Social Value. Building or creating learning spaces in Urban Environments presents multifactorial challenges in space, light, access, planning, and impact on the local community. Ingenious examples of achieving the seemingly impossible will be discussed. For example, creating or expanding schools in very densely populated areas, involving the repurposing of an existing building and offsite construction methods will be considered using case studies. The Construction and Delivery Models session will look at modular and standardised approaches to building, as well as building frameworks. The Building Across the UK session will pick up from the very successful session at last year’s event. By bringing together the UK School Building Teams, we will discuss the approaches to designing and delivering education buildings across the UK.

Education buildings are embedded in the community. In addition to their use as a place of traditional learning there are many important considerations in the planning and execution of any school-related project. From the project delivery and the
